Long Island, NY., April 1st, 2024 — Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer (SPOHNC) proudly announces the launch of its April Awareness Campaign, #lifeAhead, dedicated to showcasing life after cancer and the journey of healing and hope. Through this campaign, SPOHNC aims to empower patients, survivors and caregivers to embrace life beyond cancer and continue to fulfill their passions and dreams.
#lifeAhead embodies the essence of resilience, highlighting the stories of two individuals who refused to let cancer define them. The survivors highlighted in the #lifeAhead campaign are Frank Marcovitz, 66, our Syosset, NY Chapter Group Facilitator, an avid cyclist who travels frequently and Katie Drablos, 37, who is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Their journeys exemplify the spirit of courage, determination, and hope in the face of adversity. Click here to view their stories.
This campaign consists of three segments:
- Days Ahead: Frank and Katie share their current lives, embracing their “new normal” after experiencing Oral, Head and Neck Cancer (OHNC). They raise awareness about OHNC while living purposefully and passionately.
- Healing Ahead: Witness the healing process of Frank and Katie as they underwent treatment. This segment provides insights into their challenges, triumphs, and the strength they found within themselves.
- Hope Ahead: Frank and Katie express their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the future. Through their stories, they inspire others to find hope and envision a life beyond cancer.
“We believe that life after cancer is not merely about surviving but about thriving,” said Mary Ann Caputo, Executive Director of SPOHNC.” Our #lifeAhead campaign emphasizes the importance of maintaining normalcy and pursuing what brings joy and fulfillment. Together, we can support one another on the journey to healing.”
As part of the #lifeAhead campaign, SPOHNC encourages individuals to support its mission of raising awareness about oral, head and neck cancer and donate. Donations enable SPOHNC to provide vital resources, support programs, and educational initiatives for patients, survivors, and caregivers.

Established in 1991 by oral cancer survivor Nancy E. Leupold, MA, SPOHNC emerged from her quest for support more than 30 years ago following her diagnosis. Since its founding, SPOHNC has served as a cornerstone of education, support, and resources for survivors, and caregivers, offering comfort, encouragement, and healing throughout their journeys.
SPOHNC provides a comprehensive array of services tailored to meet the diverse needs of those affected by oral, head, and neck cancer. From distributing informative publications sharing expert health insights, to facilitating over 100 Chapter support groups nationwide, and maintaining an active online community, the organization ensures that no one faces their journey alone or struggles to support their loved ones.
In line with this commitment, SPOHNC’s National Survivor Volunteer Network also serves as a vital free service, linking survivor and caregiver volunteers with newly diagnosed patients and new caregivers. This network provides a source of encouragement, support, and hope, allowing individuals to draw strength from those who have walked in their shoes. Through shared experiences and understanding, SPOHNC fosters a sense of solidarity and resilience among patients, survivors and caregivers navigating the challenges of oral, head, and neck cancer.
Oral, head and neck cancer impacting various areas of the mouth, throat, and neck, poses distinctive challenges for patients, survivors and caregivers. From coping with issues such as dry mouth, taste alterations and difficulty with eating and swallowing, to sometimes adjusting to differences in appearance and speech, SPOHNC recognizes the multifaceted nature of the journey faced by individuals affected by oral, head and neck cancer.
SPOHNC also offers guidance and resources for everything from financial assistance, to lodging and travel and hosts informative webinars aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of oral, head, and neck cancer within the broader community. By supporting newly diagnosed patients and survivors and their loved ones, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond, into survivorship, SPOHNC continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals affected by oral, head and neck cancer.
