Did you know . . .

  • Every year in the United States, there are approximately 65,000 new cases of oral, head and neck cancer, and nearly 13,000 people die from these types of cancers.

  • As with most cancers, head and neck cancer is more likely to be treated successfully when caught early. Therefore, it is important to create awareness of the disease and its signs and symptoms, especially among those who are at the highest risk.

  • These cancers most often affect people over age 50, and men are twice as likely as women to be diagnosed with head and neck cancer. However, there has been an increase of this type of cancer in young adults in recent years.

  • The most common risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use and other risk factors include over-exposure to the sun, long-term irritation caused by dentures, poor nutrition, exposure to an industrial contaminant like asbestos or wood dust, as well as exposure to a virus, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV) or Epstein-Barr virus (EPV).

  • Studies have shown that rates of tobacco and alcohol use are higher among Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces than the general public, and because this puts them at higher risk for being diagnosed with oral and head and neck cancer, it is especially important to generate awareness among this group.
